about 5% of the whole vote for Public Works Extraordinary,

7.

Item 23, Resumptions of Insanitary Property, has been kept down to $150,000 or about 8% of the whole vote for the reasons given in my Despatch No. 349, dated 26th September, 1904. Some part of this sum will be spent in laying out and preparing building sites within the recently resumed area abutting on Gough and Aberdeen Streets and with the remainder a new scheme of resumption will be put in hand. With regard to this scheme I will communicate with you later.

Items Nos. 13, Public Latrines and Urinals; 17, Gullies Reconstruction; 18, Training Nullahs; and 23, Compensation under the Public Health and Buildings Ordinance, are all for the continuation of measures designed to improve the Sanitary Condition of the town and have already been approved in principle. Items Nos. 19, 20, 21, 25 and 31 are those already referred to as having been transferred from Public Works Recurrent. These 9 items for continuation and extension services account for $204,500 or over 11% of the whole vote.

The remaining votes are practically obligatory being for the completion or continuation of works and buildings already in hand, for most of which contracts have been entered into.

8.

The foremost are the Water Works (Items Nos. 29, 30, 32, and 33) For these it is proposed to spend $780,000 or 43% of the whole vote. Other large works to which the Colony is committed are No. 1, the Bacteriological Institute; No. 5, Gunpowder Depot at Green Island; No. 6, Harbour Office; No. 7, Law Courts; No. 9, Western Market; and No. 10, Post Office. For these $535,500 is required or 30% of the whole vote.
